The framework
Belize regulates personal data through the Data Protection Act 2021, supervised by a commissioner under the Act.
For advertisers the consent posture matters most, and Belize sits in the opt-in bloc, where tracking and outreach need permission up front.
Key instruments
Data Protection Act 2021
A modern 2021 statute on the Commonwealth Caribbean model, in force since 2022.
Marketing and advertising
GDPR-influenced consent and bases. In practice that means consent before tracking or marketing outreach, documented well enough to show a regulator.
Cross-border transfers
Transfers abroad need an adequate destination or appropriate safeguards such as contractual clauses.
Enforcement and penalties
The Act provides for fines. A ceiling means little until the authority uses it, so its docket is the better guide.
